Mindfulness Walk to Bring Awareness to Mental Health Self Care in May
May is Mental Health Awareness Month! In partnership with StarkMHAR, Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health, NAMI Stark, and the Canton Symphony weekly activities are scheduled to help increase awareness and fight the stigma attached with mental illnesses. Mental health professionals will speak on various mental health topics followed by an on your own self-guided hike through the Mindfulness Walk. Experience the immediate benefits of nature on your mind and body on a one-mile walk with activities related to mental health and self-care. Depression: May 4, 6 p.m.
Join Mary Kreitz, from Child and Adolescent Health, as she speaks about Depression. Depression is more than just having a blue day, there are things people can do to fight off depression and support a loved one who is struggling with depression. Presentation will be from 6:00 pm-6:45 pm. After the presentation, we invite you for an on-your-own journey through the Mindfulness Walk.
NAMI Stark, You are Not Alone: May 11, 6 p.m.
“NAMI Stark Cares: You Are Not Alone” NAMI Stark County, a local non-profit mental health organization, offers hope for recovery for persons & families impacted by mental illness. Presentation will be from 6:00 pm-6:45 pm.
Grief and Loss: May 18, 6 p.m.
Join Mary Kreitz, from Child and Adolescent Health, as she speaks about Grief and Loss. Over the past two years, many of us have experienced losses including loved ones. We have also experienced other types of losses including changes in our general way of life, loss of a community, or the end of a phase of life. We need to allow time to grieve these losses and to support each other as we build a new way of living after the losses. Presentation will be from 6:00 pm-6:45 pm.
Mindful Monday: Gratitude Journal: May 23, 5 p.m.
Join Stark Parks in partnership with StarkMHAR for a guided mindfulness practice before journeying through our award-winning Mindfulness Walk. Brandice Schnabel from StarkMHAR will show how to utilize a gratitude journal and the ways that it can positively impact mental health.
Principals of Music Therapy: May 25, 5 p.m.
Music can be a tool for mindfulness and healing. It can be a way to escape or to dive deeper into memory and emotion. Join a trained music therapist as they explain with principles of music therapy and guide attendees in a group music making experience. Presentation will be from 5:00 pm-5:45 pm.
After the presentation, we invite you for an on-your-own experience through the Mindfulness Walk, where musicians of the Canton Symphony Orchestra will provide accompaniment to your mindful journey.
Petros Lake Park is located on Perry Dr., just north of Faircrest St. Use 3519 Perry Dr. SW, Canton 44706 for driving directions. Use the north entrance to travel into the park and follow the signs to Shelter #1/Woodland Shelter on the right. The trail begins to the right of the shelter and volleyball court.
About the Mindfulness Walk
We invite you to take a Mindfulness Walk at Petros Lake Park. In conjunction with Stark Mental Health Addiction & Recovery (StarkMHAR), this one mile walk travels on several surface types and through different habitats while offering activities related to mental health and self-care.
Ten stations promote relaxation, focus and awareness, reflection, and embracing the present moment. Examples include a zen sand garden, a musical instrument, stacking stones, and a labyrinth.
The walk typically takes 45 minutes to an hour to complete.
